Crete Wedding Venues

Crete is the one Greek island large enough for a three-day wedding: olive-grove estates inland, five-star resorts on the Elounda coast, Venetian courtyards in Chania and Rethymno, and villas with their own sea-facing terraces — with guest counts from 40 to well past 200.

Estates, resorts, old towns and villas

Olive-grove and stone estates in the hills behind Chania and Rethymno are the classic choice for long open-air dinners: flat ground, space for a marquee or long tables, and full control over caterer, bar and timings.

Five-star resorts around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos take the logistical weight when most guests sleep on site — in-house banqueting, private beaches and a wedding coordinator included, but fixed menus and a per-guest minimum instead of a rental fee.

Venetian-era courtyards and harbourside buildings in the old towns of Chania and Rethymno suit smaller ceremonies of 40 to 90 guests with heritage rules on decor, amplified sound and end times. Private villas sit in between: intimate, flexible, and dependent on hired staff and equipment.

Legal ceremonies and paperwork

Greece allows foreign couples to marry legally on Crete. The application goes to the municipality of the wedding location — Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos or Heraklion — with apostilled birth certificates, certificates of no impediment and certified Greek translations. Allow roughly three months.

Orthodox church weddings require additional parish documents and, for mixed-denomination couples, a bishop's approval. Most couples appoint a Crete-based planner who files the paperwork and books the registrar or priest for the exact hour.

Symbolic ceremonies have no legal requirements at all and can be held anywhere the venue permits — including beaches, where a municipal permit is still needed for structures and chairs.

Season, travel and guest logistics

The season runs May to October. Late May, June, September and early October give warm evenings, softer light and calmer crowds; July and August are the hottest and busiest, and beach ceremonies need shade and water for guests.

Chania and Heraklion airports both take direct flights from most European hubs, and transfers to the main wedding areas stay under an hour. Crete is far less wind-exposed than Mykonos, so an outdoor ceremony is a safe plan.

Municipal noise rules generally push amplified outdoor music to finish around 2am; estates in the countryside often allow a later indoor after-party. Shortlist venues, planners, florists, photographers and stays in the Wedding Builder and send one bundled inquiry.

Frequently asked

Can we legally marry on Crete as foreigners?
Yes. A civil marriage is filed with the municipality of the wedding location using apostilled documents and certified Greek translations. Plan around three months for the paperwork, usually handled by a local planner.
How many guests do Crete wedding venues take?
Old-town courtyards suit 40 to 90 guests, olive-grove estates and villas typically 80 to 180, and coastal resorts comfortably host 200 or more with in-house banqueting.
When is the best month for a Crete wedding?
Late May, June, September and early October combine warm evenings with easier logistics and better light than the July and August peak.
Is a beach ceremony possible on Crete?
Yes, and it is more reliable than on the windier Cycladic islands. A municipal permit is required for chairs, arches and structures on public beaches.
How far is the airport from the venues?
Chania and Heraklion both have direct European flights, and transfers to Chania, Rethymno, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos venues generally stay under an hour.
