Zermatt is the one Velum destination with no cars at all — guests arrive by train, then move around the village and up the mountain entirely by rail and cable car, with the Matterhorn as the only backdrop.
Weddings run June to September, when high-altitude terraces at Gornergrat and Rothorn are snow-free and accessible; winter ceremonies are possible for couples who want the Matterhorn under snow, but logistics tighten considerably. Guest counts are usually modest, 20 to 80, since every guest and every case of flowers or catering equipment must move by electric taxi or cargo funicular from Täsch, where the last public car park sits.
Zurich and Geneva are both roughly three and a half hours by train with a change in Visp, and Milan Malpensa a similar distance via the Simplon line, so nearly every guest arrives by rail. Ceremonies are legally registered at the Zivilstandsamt in Visp beforehand, with the on-site event in Zermatt kept symbolic — a detail planners flag early to avoid surprises.
